So in the last few years numerous fake and counterfeit versions of famous high end (and even drugstore?!) makeup products have been available on ebay, other websites and even shops and stalls. Some are obviously not real. Others are far more realistic. I thought I would write a quick piece on this subject and give a few good ways to spot. As a rule, however, if you want to buy genuine mac the best place to get it is from a mac store, especially as you can see the colours etc in person.
In this article I will mainly be writing about avoiding buying it online, where you may well not be able to compare it in size etc to a real product.
Technique One - Check the price!
It may not be a foolproof method but it's a good place to start. Remember, if the price seems too good to be true it probably is. That's not to say that all expensive items are real, or all cheap items are fake, it's just a good indicator.

Technique Two - Mirrors and applicators
Mac don't put little sponge-tipped applicators into their products. Some fake single eyeshadows come with a mirror and applicator in a small compartment in the base. Not real.
Real mac shadows don't have this compartment! |
Technique Three - Check MAC makes it
Mac have, for example, never made a 120 or 180 eyeshadow palette. Check that it really exists before you purchase. The same goes for anything limited edition. The Hello Kitty collection are counterfeited a lot. Watch out for products that mac never made in the first place.
Technique Four - Compare
This is really important. Look at the product you want to buy online, and compare it to the real thing. If you don't already have that product then compare it to a genuine photo on the mac website. Does the same colour look totally different? Does one have a domed top? (Mac eyeshadows don't have domed tops anyway) You could be looking at a fake.
Technique Five - Avoid bulk purchases or wholesale
Again, I'm not saying all sets with lots of items are fake, I'm just saying watch out. Mac don't sell from the factory, so be especially careful of such listings.
Technique Six - Brushes are risky
Everyone loves their mac brushes, but there are some definite things to watch out for. Apart from limited edition...
• Mac don't sell brush packs
• Brushes have a black handle
• Brushes have a silver metal piece (what is that part called?)
• The country it was made in, number and the word 'MAC' are written on the handle.
These tips won't make totally sure you don't buy fake, but I hope they help. Remember there's a 'helpful' button below every post which you can click.
The safest way to buy mac is from a store or approved seller.
Love you all,
Flossie xx
PS: fake mac might not just be lower quality, some products may even be harmful or poisonous.
